Mumbai: Mumbai has reported its first death due to Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). A 53-year-old man died of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) at a Mumbai hospital, officials said on Wednesday. The patient, a resident of Wadala area and working as a ward boy at a hospital, had visited Pune a fortnight ago when he contracted GBS. He was admitted to a hospital here on January 23, they said.
He was in a critical condition for several days and died on Tuesday, officials said. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner and state-appointed administrator Bhushan Gagrani confirmed that this is the first death in the Mumbai metropolitan area due to GBS.
The first case of GBS in Mumbai was reported on February 7, when a 64-year-old woman, a resident of Andheri (east), was diagnosed with the neurological disorder. GBS is a rare condition in which a person’s immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, resulting in muscle weakness, loss of sensation in the legs and arms, and problems swallowing or breathing.
