Mumbai Airport Incident: A bang before Ethiopian Airlines flight took off at Mumbai International Airport created a stir. A bag filled with flammable chemicals caught fire before being loaded on the Mumbai-Addis Ababa flight. Police said on Saturday that it has arrested five people in this case.
This incident at Mumbai Airport happened on Friday morning. An officer of Sahar Police Station said that five people including Sameer Narayanchandra Vishwas, a resident of West Bengal, who was allegedly carrying the bag, have been arrested in this case. Along with Vishwas, Nandan Dinesh Yadav, Suresh Subba Singh, Vishwanath Balasubramaniam Senjundhar and Akhilesh Gajraj Yadav are named.
The bag was to be handed over to Naveen Sharma in Congo
The officer said that Naveen Sharma is wanted in this case, who is suspected to be in ‘Congo’. The police officer said that this incident happened around 10:30 am on Friday morning. When the luggage was being loaded on the plane. At the same time smoke was seen coming out of a bag. The bag soon caught fire, but it was extinguished immediately.
Biswas was taken into custody and questioned at the police station. He reportedly told the police that a person named Nandan Yadav had given him this bag. He told that this bag was to be handed over to Naveen Sharma in Congo. After this, Yadav and three others, including employees of the logistics company, were also arrested.
Case registered under these sections
The officer said that the bag contained 10 kg of flammable material, half of which was in liquid form and the rest in powder form. He said that it has been sent to the forensic laboratory to find out its real nature.
He said that Biswas and others were arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) and the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against Civil Aviation Security Act, 1982. He said that the purpose of carrying flammable material in the flight is also being investigated.
Ethiopian Airlines also issued a statement
Ethiopian Airlines also issued a statement on this incident. It said, ‘On the morning of August 16, a fire was observed in a baggage container carrying checked-in luggage for ETI 641 (Mumbai-Addis Ababa) in the ramp area at Mumbai airport. The incident occurred when the container was being moved from the baggage ‘make-up’ area to the aircraft.’
It said, ‘Airport security and fire brigade took immediate action. The fire was brought under control with all necessary safety procedures. The affected container and baggage are being examined by Mumbai airport officials.’ Police is investigating the matter.
