A CBI court in Mumbai today sentenced two police officers, then-PSI Sanjay Sudham Khedekar and then-Head Constable Raghunath Vithoba Kolekar, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹100,000 each in the 2009 Ghatkopar custodial death case.
The case involved the custodial death of Altaf Qadir Shaikh. It was alleged that he died due to police torture after being arrested at the Ghatkopar police station.
Case registered on the orders of the High Court and Supreme Court
The CBI registered the case on November 27, 2009, following an order of the Bombay High Court on October 16, 2009, and the Supreme Court’s directives on November 23, 2009. The case was initiated on a petition by Smita Mehrunisa Qadir Shaikh.
After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet on December 30, 2010, naming three police personnel as accused. PSI Sanjay Sudham Khedekar was accused number one, Head Constable Raghunath Vithoba Kolekar was accused number two, and Police Naik Sayaji Bapurao Thombare was accused number three. Sayaji Thombare died during the trial, so the case against him was dropped.
The court delivered its verdict after a lengthy trial.
After a lengthy trial, the court convicted and sentenced both surviving accused. The court held that the custodial deaths were the result of police torture, a serious violation of the law and human rights.
