A large number of Bangladeshis live in India, most of them illegally. Those living in the country illegally are being deported regularly, and this process is still ongoing. A large number of Bangladeshi citizens live illegally in Mumbai alone. The Mumbai Police say that those living without valid documents are being deported, and more than 1,000 have been deported so far this year.
Mumbai Police officials say that since January this year, the police have registered 401 criminal cases against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants living in Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, and 1,001 of them have been deported.
Allegations of making fake Indian documents
After confirming visa violations and gathering evidence during their investigation, the police detained Bangladeshi individuals living under suspicious circumstances in various areas of Mumbai. An official said that after being detained, they were taken to Pune and then transported to the Bangladesh border via special Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft and handed over to security forces.
Examination of the documents seized from the detained Bangladeshis revealed that many of these Bangladeshi migrants had obtained fake Indian documents, including Aadhaar cards.
Bangladeshis Deported from Delhi as Well
A continuous campaign is being carried out against Bangladeshis living illegally in India. Previously, a similar campaign was launched in the capital, Delhi, and they were deported. In June, more than a thousand people were deported from Delhi to Bangladesh.
Senior Delhi Police officials said on June 11 that more than 1,100 Bangladeshi nationals have been deported from the capital since January 2025, with nearly a third of these deportations occurring in the last two weeks. The campaign against illegal Bangladeshis was launched in December last year. Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had then ordered action against undocumented migrants.
Following the Lieutenant Governor’s directive, the Delhi Police launched a massive verification drive in the capital’s southern and central districts, checking more than 16,000 people between December and January. Officials said those living in the capital without valid documents were handed over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), and the deportation process was then expedited.
