Leaders of the opposition alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra have targeted Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar over their share in the new Union Council of Ministers led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At the swearing-in ceremony held on Sunday evening, Prataprao Jadhav of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena took oath as a minister of state with independent charge, while the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) turned down the post of minister of state, insisting on a cabinet minister post.
“BJP has shown them their place”
Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sanjay Raut on Monday said that the very low representation of the two parties in the Modi Cabinet proved that the BJP has shown them their place. “When you decide to become someone’s slave, this is what you get,” Raut told reporters. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar said that if the Ajit Pawar-led NCP does not accept the post of minister of state, then they should forget any cabinet minister post in future.
“Not surprised at not getting a cabinet berth”
Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Wadettiwar said, “Ajit Pawar will sooner or later realise that BJP has a use and discard policy for its allies.” Baramati Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule said she was not surprised that the Ajit Pawar-led NCP did not get a cabinet berth in the Modi Cabinet.
“Why should those who are out of power bother about us”
Shinde-led Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Shirsat tried to downplay the opposition’s criticism and said there must be a reason behind his party not getting any cabinet berth. “Why should others, who are out of power, bother about us,” the MLA from Marathwada region said. “When you (Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena) were in power, you had a cabinet berth but it was a minor portfolio like heavy industries,” he said.
