Let us tell you that suicide by prisoners in jails is a serious and ever-increasing major crisis. According to the reports of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and various judicial committees, suicide is the biggest cause of unnatural deaths in jails. A committee appointed by the Supreme Court had revealed in its report that out of the 817 unnatural deaths in India’s jails between 2017 and 2021, 80% (660 deaths) were due to suicide. During this period, Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of 101 prisoners who committed suicide. The biggest reason for concern is that a very large part of the prisoners who commit suicide are undertrial prisoners. These are the prisoners whose cases are pending in the courts and they have not been convicted.
Major Reasons for Prisoner Suicide
- Mental Health: Depression, anxiety, hopelessness and fear of uncertainty about the future mentally break prisoners. The stressful prison environment aggravates pre-existing mental health issues.
- Delay in judicial process: Cases drag on for years is one of the biggest causes of frustration among undertrial prisoners. Delay in justice makes them feel that they will never be able to get out of this cycle.
- Harsh Prison Environment: Overcrowding in prisons, harassment by other prisoners or staff, violence and inhumane conditions create fear and insecurity in the minds of prisoners.
- Separation from Family: Being cut off from their family and social support system makes prisoners emotionally vulnerable and lonely.
- Physical Illnesses and Drug Addiction: Prisoners suffering from serious or incurable diseases or those struggling with drug addiction also often commit suicide in extreme pain and despair.
