The Narendra Modi government of India has taken a big decision and under this, the ban imposed on export of onion has been removed. The Committee of Ministers headed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah has approved onion export.
To control the rising prices of onion in the country, the government had banned its export and had set its deadline as March 31, 2024, but this ban has been removed even before the deadline was over.
Adequate stock of onion in Gujarat-Maharashtra
This decision has been approved in the meeting of the Committee of Ministers chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah. If we talk about the reasons behind lifting the ban, then this approval has been given by the government in view of the stock of onion in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had informed the Union Home Minister about the situation of onion farmers, after which after discussion it has been decided to lift the ban.
Approval for export of 3 lakh metric tons of onion
In many earlier reports, it was expected that the Central Government is planning to remove the ban on export of onion. The main reason for this was said to be the fall in the prices of onion and other vegetables in onion producing areas. Now the Union Committee of Ministers has decided to lift the ban and has approved the export of 3 lakh metric tonnes of onion. Along with this, 50,000 tonnes of onion export has also been approved in Bangladesh.
Onion had shed tears in December 2023
Due to decrease in onion production and skyrocketing prices, the central government had announced a ban on onion export on December 8. In a notification issued in this regard by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, it was told that this ban has been imposed till March 31, 2024. It is noteworthy that in the month of December, there was a sharp increase in onion price and its price reached Rs 100 per kg. However, after this, due to the efforts of the government, its prices continued to decline.
Government had imposed 40% export duty
Amidst the rise in prices in India, one of the largest exporters of onion, along with the Onion Export Ban, the government also took steps to sell cheap onions to the people and onion was sold from the buffer stock at the rate of Rs 25 per kg. Let us tell you here that after the export ban, the price of onion decreased in the largest onion producing state Maharashtra. Due to this, onion started being supplied as per the demand and consumption in all parts of the country. The prices of onion have become soft due to good arrival of onion in wholesale markets. At the same time, the impact of softening onion prices was also visible in retail.
