Nepal: 28 people died in different incidents in different parts of the country due to bad weather, while several dozen houses collapsed due to landslides

Kathmandu: Bad weather has disrupted everyday life in Nepal. At least 28 people have died due to weather-related incidents since the arrival of the southwest monsoon till Thursday and the country has been affected by landslides, floods and lightning. The monsoon hit the eastern parts of Nepal on June 10 and since then many natural disasters have hit the country. On Wednesday, 44 incidents of landslides, floods and lightning were reported from various districts.

Nepal is spread over three main geographical regions – Himalayan region, middle mountain region and Terai. Many small and big rivers flow in the Himalayan mountain range, where weather-related incidents are increasing due to climate change. According to Home Ministry sources, 15 people have died due to landslides and floods in five districts of eastern and western Nepal. According to National Disaster Risk Mitigation and Management Authority spokesperson Dijan Bhattarai, five people each died in Lamjung and Taplejung districts, two in Kaski and one each in Sankhuwasabha and Okhaldhunga districts due to landslides. He said one person died and another went missing due to floods in Morang district.

30 houses destroyed due to landslides

30 houses have been completely damaged in these areas due to landslides. According to officials, similarly, 13 people died in 11 districts, including two people each due to lightning in Jhapa and Kailali districts. Meanwhile, officials said two people injured in landslide incidents in Okhaldhunga district were airlifted to Kathmandu by helicopter on Wednesday and are being treated at a private hospital. The government has deployed the army, Armed Police Force, police personnel as well as local people for rescue and relief work.
