Nepal: Violent demonstrations demanding restoration of monarchy took place in the capital Kathmandu, the demonstrations were led by supporters of Navraj Subedi and Durga Prasai of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, will there be a coup in Nepal like Bangladesh?

Protesters staged a violent protest in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu on Friday demanding the restoration of the monarchy. During this, the protesters set a building on fire in Tinkune area and vandalized several places. Political instability is deepening in Nepal in view of the growing resentment against the government and the anger of monarchy supporters. In such a situation, the question arises whether Nepal is also heading towards a major political crisis like Bangladesh?

The protesters gathered in Tinkune area first took out a peaceful march, but as soon as they tried to break the police barricades, the situation went out of control. The protesters started pelting stones at the security forces, in response to which the police fired tear gas shells and lathicharged. During this, many people were injured. The protesters allege that the government is deliberately trying to suppress their voice.

Who is leading?
The demonstration was led by the Joint Movement Committee led by Navraj Subedi, which also included supporters of controversial businessman Durga Prasai. Apart from this, Rajendra Lingden, the head of the Nationalist Prajatantra Party (Nationalist Pro-Monarchy Party), also supported this movement. These groups claim that the restoration of constitutional monarchy and Hindu nation in Nepal is the solution to the country’s problems.

Why is the demand for monarchy increasing?

Nepal used to be a constitutional monarchy till 2008, but due to the Maoist movement and democratic changes, it was declared a secular republic. However, in the last few years, many groups have been demanding the restoration of monarchy and Hindu nation in Nepal again. Due to rising inflation, corruption and political instability, a section of the public seems to be dissatisfied with the current system.

Can there be a coup?

Looking at the ongoing protests in Nepal, many experts are linking it to the political crisis in Bangladesh. Recently, there were massive protests against the government in Bangladesh, in which many people lost their lives. However, the situation in Nepal is not that serious at the moment, but if violence and discontent increase, then political instability in the country can deepen.

What did the government say?
The Nepal government has termed these protests as unconstitutional and has warned of strict action. The police have detained many protesters and strict action is being taken against those who spread violence. At the same time, the protesters are accusing the government of adopting repressive policies. It will be interesting to see in which direction Nepal’s politics goes in the coming days.
