The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Saturday said that it has issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government and the state’s Director General of Police in connection with the fire incident in a children’s ward in a hospital in Jhansi. 10 newborns have died in this incident. Terming the reports of the incident as disturbing, the commission has sought a detailed report within a week.
The commission said that the reports related to the incident are really disturbing and reflect negligence. Due to which the human rights of the victims have been seriously violated as they were under the care of a government institution.
Fire in NICU
The National Human Rights Commission said in a statement that it has taken suo motu cognizance of the news in the media that at least 10 newborns died due to a fire in the Neonatal Infant Care Unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College on Friday night. The statement said that 16 children were injured in the incident, while 37 were evacuated safely.
Notice to Chief Secretary and DGP
Reportedly, police officials have confirmed that the fire was caused by a short circuit and the infants who died were in incubators. The Human Rights Commission said that a notice has been issued to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of the state, seeking a detailed report within a week.
Formation of a four-member committee
The report should include the status of the FIR lodged in the case, action taken against officials responsible for the incident, treatment being provided to the injured and compensation (if any) given to the victim families. The Commission said that it would also like to know what steps have been taken or proposed by the authorities to prevent recurrence of such incidents. The Uttar Pradesh government has formed a four-member committee to investigate the incident that took place on Saturday.
