Nigeria: Tanker driver lost control on Nigeria’s expressway, colliding with 17 other vehicles, killing 18 people, injuring many

Nigeria Tanker Blast: 18 people were killed and 10 others injured in a petrol tanker explosion in Nigeria. A tanker filled with gasoline lost control and collided with 17 vehicles on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in Enugu State, Nigeria, after which a fire broke out. The injured have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.

According to a Reuters report, a Nigeria Road Safety Corps official said that the tanker’s brakes failed, causing the driver to lose control and the tanker collided with more than a dozen vehicles on the expressway. He said, “10 people have been sent to the hospital and three people have not suffered any harm. 18 people were burnt in such a way that it is difficult to even identify them.”

Due to the lack of railway lines for transport, truck accidents have become common on most major roads in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country. Earlier this month, 98 people were killed in a gasoline tanker explosion in north-central Nigeria. The accident occurred while refilling gasoline from one tank to another.

Many Nigerians blame the ongoing economic hardship for the frequent incidents, which has forced people to commit desperate acts, including siphoning gasoline from fallen tankers. Many are calling for stricter traffic regulations to prevent similar disasters.

Early in October last year, Nigerian President Ahmed Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to swiftly review and enhance fuel transportation safety protocols. The government directed the police to strengthen measures such as increased patrols, enhanced safety regulations and other highway safety mechanisms.
