Maharashtra: Ten BJP workers were arrested on Saturday in connection with the attack on senior Marathi journalist Nikhil Wagle in Pune, Maharashtra. An FIR was lodged at Parvati police station in the city on Saturday evening, a day after the attack on the car carrying Wagle and others to a public meeting, a police officer said.
According to Deccan Herald, the police officer said that the accused have been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 147 (rioting), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon or instrument), 336 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety). A case has been registered under IPC, 427 (causing damage to property) and others.
Protesting a senior journalist’s remarks about senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani being honored with the country’s highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’ by the Narendra Modi government, BJP workers vandalized his car. Wagle and activists Aseem Sarode and Vishwambhar Chaudhary were traveling in this car under police protection.
BJP workers vandalized the car
This attack was carried out when he was going to address the Nirbhay Bano rally. The complaint filed by a woman, on which the FIR was based, claimed that she and some others were protecting Wagle’s car while some BJP workers pelted stones at the vehicle and injured him. The arrested activists have been identified as Deepak Pote, Ganesh Ghosh, Ganesh Sherla, Raghavendra Mankar, Swapnil Naik, Prateek Desarda, Dushyant Mohol, Datta Sagare, Girish Mankar and Rahul Pegude.
Editors Guild of India condemned the attack
In a statement issued in the national capital, the Editors Guild of India condemned the attack on the journalist and urged the Maharashtra government to take action against the culprits. The opposition Congress said the attack on the ‘outspoken journalist’ reflected the breakdown of law and order in the state.
Let us tell you that earlier, BJP leader Sunil Deodhar filed a complaint against Wagle for allegedly making objectionable remarks against PM Modi and Advani. After this, a case was registered at Vishrambag police station under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 500 (defamation) and 505 (statements inciting public mischief).
