A major accident took place on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri 2025 at the famous Lingaraj temple located in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha. A servant fell and got injured while offering Mahadeep on the peak of the temple at 10:30 pm on Wednesday. However, despite the accident, the Mahadeep was successfully installed on the top of the temple a few minutes late than the scheduled time.
Special rituals are held every year on the day of Mahashivratri at the Lingaraj temple, in which there is a tradition of offering Mahadeep to the top of the temple. This year also, the process of offering Mahadeep was to start at 10:00 pm as per the scheduled time, but due to delay in worship, it started about 40 minutes late.
How did the accident happen?
At 10:30 pm, when the servant was moving towards the peak with Mahadeep, suddenly he lost his balance and fell down and got injured. During this, another servant showed presence of mind and handled the Mahadeep and safely took it to the top of the temple. At 10:40 pm, Mahadeep was duly installed on the peak of the temple.
Devotees chanted Har Har Mahadev
Thousands of devotees were present in the temple premises to witness this sacred ritual. As soon as Mahadeep reached the peak, the devotees chanted Har Har Mahadev and an atmosphere of devotion prevailed in the entire temple premises.
Condition of injured servant stable
The treatment of the servant injured due to the fall is going on and his condition is said to be stable. The temple administration has also ordered an inquiry into the incident and has said that strict security arrangements will be made to avoid such accidents in future.
Significance of Mahashivratri and Mahadeep
Mahashivratri has special significance in Lingaraj temple. On this day, devotees celebrate the mythological belief of the marriage of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati with full devotion. The tradition of offering Mahadeep on the peak of the temple is years old, which is considered a symbol of Shiva devotion.
