Om Birla furious over opposition’s allegations of switching off mikes, there is no switch or remote control to switch off the microphones of members.

Congress has often been alleging that when the opposition leader in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi speaks in the House, his microphone is switched off. During the last proceedings of the Lok Sabha on Friday, Gaurav Gogoi and Deepender Hooda had raised this issue.

However, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has now responded to these allegations of Congress. He said that the presiding officers do not have any switch or remote control to turn off the microphones of the members raising issues in the House.

Such allegations are a matter of concern
The Speaker said that the allegation of the Chairman turning off the microphone is a matter of concern. He wants the House to discuss this issue. The bench only gives decisions/directions. The member whose name is called gets the opportunity to speak in the House. The mic is controlled as per the instructions of the chair. The presiding person does not have a remote control or microphone switch.

You have been there for many years and have experience
Om Birla told the opposition MPs, ‘Outside, people allege that the presiding officers turn off the mics. You have been there for many years and have experience. You were in the old House and are also in the new House. You must know that the remote of the mic is not with the chair, no matter which party the member belongs to. Therefore, such allegations cannot be made.’

Congress MP K. Mentioned Suresh
Speaker Om Birla then mentioned Congress MP K. Suresh and said that the panel of chairmen represents members of all political parties, who preside over the proceedings in the absence of the Speaker. That’s why Suresh ji also sits here. Someone should ask him if there is any control there? This is a matter of dignity of the chair. At least those who are presiding should not raise such objections.

Is there any button near the Speaker’s chair?

After this, he himself asked him whether there is any button near the Speaker’s chair? When Suresh refused to this, then Birla said, I do not have any button to turn off the microphone. A similar set-up was present earlier as well. Look, there is no button. Only arrangements are made from the chair. We do not turn off the mic.

In fact, earlier on Friday, the Congress had alleged that the mic of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi was turned off in the Lok Sabha for demanding a discussion on the NEET paper leak.
