Cooperation in combating terrorism, money laundering, organized crime and activities of pro-Khalistan elements in the US was discussed in the internal security talks between India and the US on Wednesday.

The Indian delegation in the talks was led by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and the US delegation was led by his counterpart Christine Cangallo, Acting Deputy Secretary of the US Homeland Security Department.

According to an official statement, during the talks, both sides reviewed the ongoing cooperation in the field of security and fight against terrorism. In this context, they discussed the steps that can be taken to combat terrorism and violent extremism, drug trafficking and organized crime and to ensure transportation security.

 Khalistan issue also discussed

The Indian delegation is also believed to have raised the issue of activities of pro-Khalistan elements on US soil and their active support and funding to separatist elements based in India. The meeting was held in the backdrop of the alleged assassination attempt on American citizen and pro-Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannu. America is demanding accountability in this matter.

Demand for extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana

India is also demanding action against pro-Khalistan elements involved in the attack on the Indian Consulate in San Francisco in July, 2023. NIA has identified more than 50 Khalistan supporters involved in the attack on the Consulate in San Francisco. India is also demanding the extradition of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana.

While discussing ways to deal with illegal immigrants, the meeting also discussed the possibility of sharing biometric information as both sides have learned that many illegal immigrants may not have travel documents. Some specific ways to deal with such cases were discussed, including detention of illegal immigrants and their deportation within 30 days. However, no decision was taken on this. U.S. efforts to restrict access to fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, were also discussed.
