Asif Ali Zardari became the President of Pakistan for the second time, this is how he created history

Asif Ali Zardari created history on Saturday, March 9. Asif Ali Zardari was elected as the 14th President of Pakistan with an overwhelming majority and became the first civilian to serve a second term. Zardari, co-chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party, was the candidate of the alliance of PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). 68-year-old Zardari got 255 votes in the National Assembly and Senate. Asif Ali Zardari is the husband of Pakistan’s former and first woman Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

How history was created
His opponent Mahmood Khan Achakzai is the head of his Pashtunkha Milli Awami Party (PKMAP). He was fielded by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and supported by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). “Asif Ali Zardari is the first civilian President in the history of Pakistan who has been elected to hold the post for the second time,” the PPP posted on Twitter soon after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced the election results. 68-year-old Zardari got 255 votes in the National Assembly and Senate while his 75-year-old opponent got 119 votes.

How many votes did you get from which assembly?
The new President was elected by the Electoral College of newly elected members of the National Assembly and the four legislatures. In the Sindh Assembly, where Zardari’s PPP is in power, he got 58 votes, while in the Balochistan Assembly too he got all 47 votes. In the Punjab Assembly, where PML-N has formed the government, Zardari got 43 votes while Achakzai got 18 votes. In the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, where the SIC/PTI is in power, Achakzai got 41 votes while Zardari got only 8 votes. The total number of valid votes cast was 1,035, the Election Commission of Pakistan said. He said that the total number of seats in the electoral college was 1,185, out of which 92 were vacant. The remaining 1,093 voters had to exercise their franchise. The Election Commission said that 1,044 votes were cast, of which nine were declared invalid.

Benazir Bhutto’s husband
Zardari, a businessman-turned-politician, is the husband of Pakistan’s former and first woman Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Zardari was allegedly involved in large-scale corruption cases during his wife’s two terms as prime minister. He earned the derogatory nickname of ‘Mr. 10 Percent’ because of his alleged share in bribery. He spent several years behind bars, allegedly implicated in several corruption cases, and even faced custodial violence, but was not convicted. He was acquitted on all counts. As he begins his second term in office, the country will be faced with a dilapidated economic and political system. Zardari will replace the current Dr. Arif Alvi, whose five-year tenure ended last year.

PTI said elections unconstitutional
Meanwhile, Imran Khan’s PTI described Zardari’s election as Pakistan President as “unconstitutional and unacceptable” and urged people to hold peaceful protests across the country on Sunday against electoral robbery. Khan has already claimed that the February 8 elections were “rigged” and called his opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) “mandate thieves”. PTI spokesperson Rauf Hasan said, on one hand, newly elected President Zardari will reach the highest constitutional post with the help of votes of mandate thieves and on the other hand, the electoral college was incomplete. He said that voting for the President by unelected members who took fake oath on the stolen mandate was completely unconstitutional and unacceptable.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif congratulated
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is also the chairman of the PML-N party, congratulated Zardari on securing the presidency for a second term. The Prime Minister acknowledged that the elected members of the National Assembly, Senate and four provinces have shown their confidence in Zardari through their votes. Shahbaz said that President-elect Zardari will serve as a symbol of the strength of the federation, stressing the hope that Zardari will fulfill his constitutional duties.
