Pakistan-based Jamaat-ud-Dawa deputy chief Abdul Rehman Makki is reported to have died. He was ill for several days.

Lahore: Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki, a relative of Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of the Mumbai attacks in India and deputy chief of the banned Jamaat-ud-Dawa, died of a heart attack here on Friday. He was also responsible for the Mumbai attack. According to Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JUD), Professor Abdul Rehman Makki was ill for the last few days and was being treated for high diabetes at a private hospital in Lahore.

A JUD official told, “Makki suffered a heart attack this morning and breathed his last in the hospital.” Makki, a relative of JUD chief Hafiz Saeed, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by an anti-terrorism court in 2020 in a case of financing terrorism.

Declared a global terrorist

Makki was the deputy chief of JUD and has not been discussed much since his sentencing in the case of financing terrorism. The Pakistan Muttahida Muslim League (PMML) said in a statement that Makki was a supporter of Pakistani ideology. Makki was designated a global terrorist by the United Nations in 2023, subject to an asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo.
