Lahore: Jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has moved the Lahore High Court seeking bail after his arrest in eight cases related to the May 9, 2023 violence. These cases also include an attack on the residence of a senior military officer. Separate bail petitions were filed before the Lahore High Court on Saturday. In November last year, the Lahore Anti-Terrorism Court had refused to grant bail to Khan in these cases.
Imran Khan (72) argued in his petitions that the prosecution has failed to prove his involvement in the May 9 violence that followed his arrest. Violent protests broke out after Khan’s arrest by the paramilitary Rangers on May 9, 2023 from the Islamabad High Court complex. His party workers vandalized a dozen military installations, including Jinnah House (Lahore Corps Commander House), Mianwali airbase and ISI building in Faisalabad.
Mob attacked Army Headquarters
The mob also attacked the Army Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. Khan said he was implicated in the May 9 cases as a result of “a well-planned conspiracy to harass and humiliate him for political reasons only”. He said the only charge against him in these cases is of “incitement”, which has been advanced by the prosecution in an extremely vague manner. The Lahore High Court is likely to consider Khan’s plea on Monday. Khan has been in jail since August 2023 in connection with several cases.
