Pakistan: Police in Punjab province on Sunday registered cases against over 450 people and arrested 25 people under terrorism and other charges for attacking members of the minority Christian community and police personnel.

Police in Pakistan’s Punjab province on Sunday registered a case against more than 450 people for attacking members of the minority Christian community and police personnel over the issue of alleged insult to a religious book. In this, 25 people have been arrested under terrorism and other charges. Two members of the Christian community and 10 policemen were injured in this attack.

An angry mob led by radical Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) activists on Saturday attacked members of the Christian community in Mujahid Colony in Sargodha district of Punjab province, about 200 km from Lahore. More than 450 people accused Nazir Masih of insulting the Quran and surrounded his residence and shoe factory. The mob set fire to the shoe factory, some shops and houses.

Allegation of insult to Quran denied

A mob of Muslim community in Pakistan’s Punjab province attacked minority Christian families accusing them of blasphemy. A church was also targeted in this case. Not only this, the frenzied mob also threw stones and bricks at the police. In the FIR, Nazir has said that the mob also set several people on fire, but the timely arrival of the police force saved the lives of 10 other members of the Christian community. However, Masih’s family has denied the charge of insulting the Quran.

Video viral on social media

Many posts are viral on social media regarding this matter. In these videos, protesters can be seen looting goods from burning properties. Other people were seen throwing goods into the fire on the road. Pakistan’s Independent Human Rights Commission said that the lives of the Christian community are in danger. Human rights groups say Pakistan’s harsh blasphemy laws are often misused to settle personal scores.
