New Delhi: A powerful explosion rocked Islamabad, Pakistan, today during Friday prayers. It was a suicide attack that killed more than 71 people and severely injured over 200. Surprisingly, the suicide attack occurred just 11 miles from the Pakistani Army headquarters in Rawalpindi. The suicide bomber detonated himself at the gate of a mosque in Tarlaai Kalan, a suburban area of Islamabad. The explosion was so powerful that its sound was heard up to five kilometers away. The blast in Pakistan caused widespread panic and chaos. An emergency has been declared in Islamabad following the incident.
India’s Reaction to the Blast
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement on the Islamabad blast. According to the statement, India said, “The bomb blast at a mosque in Islamabad this morning is deplorable, and India expresses its deepest condolences for the loss of life and property. It is unfortunate that instead of seriously addressing the problems inherent in its social fabric, Pakistan is choosing to delude itself by blaming others for its domestic crises. India completely rejects any such allegations, which are baseless and unwarranted.”

Blast at a large Shia mosque
It is worth noting that the mosque where the suicide attack took place today in Islamabad is a large mosque belonging to the Shia community. The mosque complex also houses a madrasa and an imambara. Being a major Shia mosque in the area, it attracts a large crowd of worshippers on Fridays, which is why the time of Friday prayers was chosen for the suicide attack. The suicide bomber intended to detonate the bomb among the worshippers, but the security guards became suspicious of his movements and stopped him. He then pulled out his automatic rifle and started firing. By the time the security guards could return fire, the attacker had detonated a bomb at the mosque gate.
