New Delhi: India has announced immediate financial assistance of US $ 1 million to provide relief to the people of Papua New Guinea affected by the landslide. The landslide that occurred on May 24 in the island nation’s Enga province left hundreds of people buried under the debris and caused massive destruction. According to media reports from Papua New Guinea, more than 2000 people have died in the landslide. The situation is such that the rescue team is facing difficulties in relief and rescue operations.
India provided immediate assistance
The Ministry of External Affairs said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the accident and has conveyed India’s readiness to provide all possible assistance to this island nation located in the Pacific Ocean in difficult times. The ministry said, “As a close friend and partner under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) and in the spirit of solidarity with the friendly people of Papua New Guinea, the Government of India has provided immediate relief assistance of US $ 1 million to help in relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.”
‘India will remain a responsible country’
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that India stands in solidarity with the people of Papua New Guinea in this difficult time. Jaishankar said on ‘X’, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of life in Papua New Guinea after the recent landslide.” He said, “We are with the government and people there. India stands in solidarity with our friends in this difficult time.” The Ministry of External Affairs said that India also stood firmly with the people of Papua New Guinea during the 2018 earthquake and the volcanic eruptions of 2019 and 2023. The ministry said that India is committed to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and will remain a responsible country.
