Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left for a two-day visit to Mauritius. The main objective of this visit is to further strengthen relations between India and Mauritius and promote cooperation between the two countries. PM Modi’s visit is taking place at the invitation of Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. He will also attend the National Day celebrations of Mauritius during this visit. Mauritius celebrates its National Day on March 12.
Purpose of the Prime Minister’s visit
Prime Minister Modi said in a statement before leaving for Mauritius, “This visit will add a new and bright chapter to the relations between India and Mauritius.” He also informed that his visit is part of the “SAGAR Vision”, which aims to promote security, development and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region. ‘SAGAR’ stands for “Security and Growth for All in the Region”. PM Modi said, “The center of our efforts will always be the progress and prosperity of our people as well as regional security and development.”
India-Mauritius relations are important
The Prime Minister described Mauritius as a close maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean, a key partner and a gateway to the African continent. He said, “We are deeply connected to each other by history, geography and culture. Deep mutual trust between the two countries, shared faith in the values of democracy and pride in diversity are our strengths.” PM Modi also said that the close and historical ties between India and Mauritius are a source of shared pride.
Close partnership between the two countries
Prime Minister Modi pointed out that in the last 10 years, there has been significant progress in relations between the two countries through several people-oriented initiatives. He said that India is one of the largest trading partners of Mauritius. Trade and economic cooperation between the two countries is getting stronger. Mauritius has emerged as the second largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) in India for 2023-24 after Singapore.
Participation of Indian Armed Forces
During Prime Minister Modi’s visit, a contingent of the Indian Armed Forces, a warship of the Indian Navy and the Akash Ganga ‘Skydiving Team’ of the Indian Air Force will also participate in the National Day celebrations of Mauritius.
