Recently, the police recovered a foreign woman from a mysterious cave located in the hills of Gokarna, who spent the last several years in the forest – that too with her two young daughters. This woman of Russian origin was not only living in the cave, but she also gave birth to daughters there, taught them yoga, meditation and spiritual life. The forest was her home, snakes were her friends, and sadhana was her life.

The police were also shocked when this ‘Jungle ki Sadhvi’ was found in the cave along with Rudra idol, Russian religious books and children’s items. Who is this woman? Why did she choose the forest, cut off from the world? And what is there in this cave of Gokarna that she made it her hideout for years? Let’s know this mystery-filled story.

A cave hidden in the quiet, lush forests of Uttara Kannada district. This cave has become the center of a unique and mysterious story at the foot of Ramtirtha hill, 500 meters above the sea. Here recently the police found a Russian woman and her two young daughters.

Came to India in 2016

40-year-old Nina Kutina alias Mohi came to India on a business visa in 2016. Her visa expired in 2017. After this, instead of leaving the country, she took refuge in nature.

Nina made the forest her home. She made a cave near Gokarna her permanent residence, where she had been living for the past several years. She had two daughters with her – 6-year-old Preya and 4-year-old Ama. Both these girls were born not in the clean four walls of a hospital, but in the forest amidst soil, rocks and chirping of birds.

Meditates in the moonlight

Nina neither went to any hospital nor met a doctor. She gave birth to and raised her daughters under her care. She taught them yoga, meditation, painting and spirituality. According to Nina, this life was no less than a penance. The three of them slept on plastic sheets, woke up in the sunlight, and meditated in the moonlight.

Talking about ration, their main diet was instant noodles, some packed food and fruits, leaves, flowers and herbs from the nearby forests. Neena says that snakes are her friends and they do not harm unless they are disturbed.

During a routine police patrol on July 9, they saw some saris and plastic covers hanging outside the cave. This aroused suspicion. When the team reached near the cave, suddenly a small foreign girl came running out. When the police team went inside and looked, a simple house was built in the cave. There were Russian books, a statue of Rudra, pictures of Hindu gods and goddesses and signs of meditation.

This area is very dangerous

According to Superintendent of Police M Narayan, this area is very dangerous. There was a landslide here last year and there is also a lot of snakes. Despite this, Neena and her daughters were safe. When the officials asked them to leave, they hesitated at first. Later, they were slowly explained that staying there could be fatal.

Nina had taken permission to go to Nepal in 2018, but returned to India a few months later and started living in the forest after her visa expired.

Swamiji is looking after

During the investigation, the police recovered Nina’s passport and expired visa. Now the process of extradition of her and her daughters to Russia has started. At present, all three have been kept in an ashram in Kumta taluka, where elderly Swamiji is looking after them.

Inspector Sridhar, who led the rescue operation, said that it seems miraculous for this woman to survive in the forest for so long and raise two innocent children. Investigation has revealed that they were living in the same cave for two weeks, but it is not yet clear for how long they have been in the forests of Gokarna.

Gokarna caves

The police found packets of instant noodles, salad items and a wood-burning stove near Nina. When Nina was asked why she chose such a life, she said that she had faith in Lord Krishna and had come for meditation and penance. She was doing sadhna in the cave. The police saw her doing idol worship.

Now with the help of a local NGO, the Russian embassy has been contacted and all formalities are being completed. The caves of Gokarna, especially the cave where Nina was living, have a small Shivlinga located there. Bats live here, this deep cave is also known as ‘Gau Garbha’.
