The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has released its preliminary investigation report in the case of the death of six people in a helicopter accident in Uttarakhand in May. According to the report, the main rotor blade of the helicopter hit the fiber cable passing above and then fell down the hill and hit a tree. Releasing the preliminary investigation report of the accident on Saturday, the AAIB said that the investigation team is working on further action to find out the root causes of the accident.
The 17-year-old Bell 407 helicopter operated by Aerotrans Services Private Limited, carrying six passengers, crashed 24 minutes after takeoff on May 8. The pilot and five passengers were killed in the accident, while one passenger was seriously injured.
The helicopter accident took place in Ganganani
AAIB said that the helicopter was completely destroyed in the accident after taking off from Kharsali helipad at 8.11 am on May 8, but it did not catch fire. The accident took place at 8.35 am in Ganganani, Uttarkashi.
Started descending after takeoff
In its five-page report, AAIB said that the helicopter started descending below its prescribed height after flying for 20 minutes. The report said, “Initially, the pilot attempted to land near Ganganani on Uttarkashi-Gangotri Road (NH 34). During the landing attempt, the main rotor blade of the helicopter collided with an overhead fibre cable running parallel to the road.”
The helicopter fell down the hill
The report further stated, “It also damaged some metal barricades on the roadside. However, the helicopter could not land and fell down the hill. It finally stopped after hitting a tree in a ditch about 250 feet deep.”
The helicopter was manufactured in 2008
This helicopter, powered by a Rolls Royce engine, was manufactured in 2008. The US National Transportation Safety Board and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada have appointed accredited representatives and technical advisors for this investigation. The report said, “The investigation team is coordinating with them for further action to find out the root cause.”
