Lisbon: President Draupadi Murmu said during an interactive session with Indian researchers in Portugal’s capital Lisbon on Tuesday that Indians want to win hearts, not countries. The President asked Indian researchers at the ‘Samplimo Centre for the Unknown’ to become the best representatives of India, as they are identified with the name of their country. In response to a researcher’s question, Murmu said, “You will excel in education. You will excel in research. You will become a good scholar, you will contribute to the economy and society and follow the rules and regulations here. Go ahead and make India proud.”
The President answered the researchers’ questions
The President stood up in her place to answer every question asked by the researchers. She said, “I went to a country where a senior leader asked me if Indians want to conquer the world. I said Indians don’t want to win countries, they want to win hearts.’ When asked about the progress of women in India, Murmu said it is in Indian culture to say Sitaram, Lakshmi Narayana and address people as ladies and gentlemen. Murmu said she feels proud to see women medal winners, senior women officers and women leaders in various fields.
‘People of Portugal are friendly and generous’
President Murmu said Portugal is a good friend of India and the people of this country are friendly and generous and the country is full of natural beauty. Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Champalimaud Foundation President Dr. Leonor Belleza welcomed the President at the Sampalimo Centre. On the visit to the centre, Murmu and Sousa were briefed on the working of the robot that delivers medicines from the pharmacy to cancer patients. Murmu also planted a ‘Camellia Japonica’ plant on the campus. The Sampalimo Centre for the Unknown, designed by Indian architect Charles Mark Correa, is a stunning example of contemporary architectural grandeur.
