Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for a three-day visit to Brunei Darussalam and Singapore on Tuesday. Before leaving for the visit of both the countries, he posted on X that there will be talks on improving relations with both the countries. PM Modi will reach Brunei Darussalam on the invitation of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
The PM is making this visit on the completion of 40 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei. This is the first visit of any Indian Prime Minister to Brunei. After this, he will go to Singapore on the invitation of Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. This visit is scheduled between 4-5 September.
What did the PM say about the Brunei and Singapore visit
PM Modi tweeted before his visit to Brunei and Singapore, saying, ‘In the next two days I will visit Brunei Darussalam and Singapore. During all the programs in these countries, the focus will be on further strengthening relations with India. India-Brunei Darussalam diplomatic relations have completed 40 glorious years. I look forward to meeting His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.’
PM Modi further said, ‘In Singapore, I will hold talks with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. We are eager to further strengthen relations in key areas.’ Brunei is an important partner in India’s ‘Act East’ policy and Indo-Pacific vision. This visit of PM Modi will strengthen defense cooperation, trade and investment, energy, space technology, health cooperation, capacity building, exchange of culture.

On PM Modi’s Brunei visit, Foreign Ministry Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar said, ‘PM will hold bilateral discussions on all aspects of relations and cooperation with Brunei. We have very cordial and friendly relations with Brunei. The number of Indian expatriates in Brunei is around 14,000 and these also include Brunei doctors and teachers, who have earned goodwill and respect for their contribution to Brunei’s economy and society. Brunei has been our country coordinator in ASEAN from 2012 to 2015 and has played and continues to play an important role in our further engagement with ASEAN.
