Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sri Lanka early next month to finalize the agreements reached during Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s visit to Delhi last year.
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath made this statement in Colombo in response to a question on the discussion on budget allocation in Parliament. Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Herath said, ‘We have maintained close relations with our neighboring country India. Our first diplomatic visit was to India, where we signed several agreements on bilateral cooperation’.

He said, ‘Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will come here in early April’. Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said, ‘Apart from the inauguration of the Sampur Solar Power Station, several new MoUs will be signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. State-run power unit Ceylon Electricity Board and India’s NTPC had agreed to build a 135 MW solar power plant in Sampur town of eastern Trincomalee district in 2023’.
This will be the PM’s fourth visit since 2015
Vijitha Herath said, ‘We will remain neutral in our foreign policy without taking sides and will work to maintain national interest’. This will be Prime Minister Modi’s fourth visit to Sri Lanka since 2015.
Anura Kumara Disanayake won the 2024 election amid political and economic turmoil in Sri Lanka in the past years. This was the first presidential election after Sri Lanka went bankrupt, in which Marxist leader Disanayake won.
Sri Lanka is situated in a place in the Indian Ocean, which is at the center of maritime trade. Global trade has been taking place from this country connecting West and East Asia. Both China and India want to secure their presence here.
