Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will visit Parbhani in Maharashtra today. He will meet the families of two people killed in the violence earlier this month. A glass statue of the Constitution near the statue of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar outside the railway station in Parbhani, Maharashtra, was damaged on the evening of 10 December, after which reports of violence emerged. The statue was located in the Marathwada region.
According to the program shared by Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar, Rahul Gandhi will meet the families of Ambedkarite Somnath Suryavanshi, who allegedly died in police custody, and Vijay Wakode, who died while participating in the protest. Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Parbhani has been termed as a drama by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
However, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently said in the state assembly that Suryavanshi had told the magistrate that he was not tortured. Moreover, CCTV footage does not provide any evidence of brutality. Fadnavis has already announced a judicial probe into the Parbhani violence. BJP’s Maharashtra chief and revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has called Gandhi’s visit a ‘drama’.
Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC called it hypocrisy
“Instead of doing such drama, the focus should be on how society can be benefited in constructive ways. The BJP and the state government are committed to keeping the society and all communities united,” she said. Describing his visit as ‘hypocrisy’, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC took a dig at opposition leader Rahul Gandhi over his plan to visit Parbhani and said the Congress leader never showed any concern over the scuffle in Parliament. “Rahul Gandhi is coming to Parbhani by a special flight. He will come to Nanded, go to Parbhani and show that he is with Somnath Suryavanshi’s family,” she said.
