Tension erupted on the highway in Rani town of Pali district, Rajasthan, on Friday evening (November 10) when protesting cattle herders pelted stones at the police. In response, the police resorted to a mild lathi charge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Chaos ensued on the Beawar-Pindwara National Highway 162.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. Friday near Balarai village, where the Rashtriya Pashupalak Sangh and the DNT Sangharsh Samiti were protesting for various demands. The protesters had staged a sit-in on the highway, blocking traffic. Police officials held several rounds of talks with the protesters, but no resolution was reached.
Police dispersed the protesters with a lathi charge.
According to media reports, as the situation escalated, the protesters began pelting stones at the police. Some policemen were injured in the sudden attack, and a stampede ensued. To bring the situation under control, the police used force, lathi-charge, and tear gas. The protesters were then chased off the highway. The administration immediately diverted traffic to avoid inconvenience to commuters.
The protest was being held over demands for employment and reservation.
According to reports, the protest was being held to highlight the demands of the DNT community and cattle herders. The protesters say the government has yet to take any concrete steps to address their problems. The movement, led by National President Lal Singh Dewasi, includes key demands such as employment, reservation, and compensation.
Every effort is being made to maintain peace – ASP
Meanwhile, the police administration is continuously negotiating with the delegation of protesters. ASP Vipin Sharma stated that the situation is now completely under control. Negotiations are underway with representatives of cattle herders to prevent further incidents. He added that a heavy police force has been deployed in the area and every effort is being made to maintain peace.
This clash in Pali has once again raised questions about the need for dialogue between the administration and the protesters. Although the situation was reported to be normal by late evening, both the police and the administration are on high alert to prevent any new situations from developing.
