Vaibhav Gehlot, son of Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, resigned from the post of President of Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) on Monday. He alleged that an attempt was being made to create an “atmosphere of distrust” in RCA by targeting him. In his resignation letter, Vaibhav said that after the change of government in Rajasthan, work is being done against RCA with “malicious intentions”.
He said, “Now an attempt has been made to create an atmosphere of distrust in RCA by targeting me. Due to this, there is a possibility of spoiling the positive atmosphere of cricket in the state. In such a situation, it is unbearable for me that there should be any crisis on IPL matches in the state or any loss to cricket. Therefore, to save the cricket and cricket players of the state from this situation, I am voluntarily resigning from the post of President of RCA.”
The development comes in the backdrop of the Rajasthan Sports Council taking over the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, which houses the RCA office, accusing the RCA of not meeting its liabilities, including payment of dues.
An atmosphere of distrust is being created in RCA.
Ashok Gehlot said, ‘The hasty action taken by the Sports Council against RCA seems to be motivated by political malice. Even though the MOU was about to expire, this action could have been taken gracefully (in a proper legal manner) instead of a sudden lockdown. “Such action will reduce the trust of national organizations on the sports associations of Rajasthan and the sports environment created during our government will deteriorate.”
In his letter, Vaibhav said, “I have received information that a no-confidence motion has been presented against me also. In this regard, all I have to say is that no official or member of RCA has discussed with me nor expressed disagreement on any issue, otherwise I would have already tendered my resignation.
The RCA office was hastily locked
He said that after the change of government, they started taking action against the RCA with malice, the RCA office was even locked in an unreasonable and hasty manner. Efforts were started to create an atmosphere of distrust in RCA by targeting me. The positive atmosphere that has been created in cricket. There is also a possibility of it getting spoiled.
With the help of party leader CP Joshi, himself a former president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association, Vaibhav was elected RCA president in October 2019, months after the party’s Lok Sabha defeat. In December 2022, he was again elected unopposed for this post.
On the recurring disputes between the Council and the RCA over the SMS Stadium – this is not the first time that the Council has locked the RCA office. Vaibhav said that RCA does not have any stadium of its own and international cricket matches were organized at SMS Stadium under RCA.
