Rajya Sabha Election 2024: The stage is set for the elections to be held on 56 Rajya Sabha seats on 27 February. today is the last day of nomination. Today BJP President JP Nadda will file nomination from Gujarat. Apart from these, many other leaders will also fill their nominations for the elections. These include Congress nominees Manu Singhvi and Ashwini Vaishnav.
Earlier, many candidates of other opposition parties including BJP and Congress filed nominations for the elections on Wednesday (14 February). Seven candidates of BJP filed nominations while candidates of Congress and Samajwadi Party also filed nominations.
Sonia Gandhi nominated
At the same time, on behalf of Congress, former party president Sonia Gandhi filed nomination papers for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Rajasthan. At the same time, Samajwadi Party has nominated former MP Ramlal Suman, retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers Alok Ranjan and Jaya Bachchan for three Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh.
Elections are to be held on 56 seats
Out of the 56 seats on which elections are to be held, 10 seats are in Uttar Pradesh, six seats each in Maharashtra and Bihar, five seats in West Bengal, five seats in Madhya Pradesh, four seats in Gujarat, four seats in Karnataka, three each in The seats are in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rajasthan. Apart from this, elections are to be held on one seat each in Odisha, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
The Election Commission had issued a notification for this on Thursday (February 8). Nominations can be filed for Rajya Sabha till 15 February. Candidates can withdraw their names till 20th February.
Rajya Sabha election process
There are total 245 seats in Rajya Sabha. Elections are held every two years for one-third of its seats. Elected members of State Legislative Assemblies and Union Territories participate in the elections of Rajya Sabha. The party nominates its candidates in the Rajya Sabha on the basis of its strength in the respective state assemblies.

BJP has made Dharamsheela Gupta and Bhim Singh its candidates from Bihar. Whereas Congress will field Akhilesh Prasad Singh and Sanjay Kumar Jha from Janata Dal United (JDU). BJP’s JP Nadda, Govindbhai Dholakia, Mayank Bhai Nayak, Jashwant Singh Salam Singh Parmar will file nomination from Gujarat.
BJP’s Chunnilal Garasia and Madan Rathod will be in the fray from Rajasthan. On the other hand, Sonia Gandhi has nominated from Congress side. Raja Devendra Pratap Singh from Chhattisgarh, Subhash Barala from Haryana and BJP’s Narayan Krishnasa Bhandge from Karnataka will go to Rajya Sabha. Congress has fielded Ajay Maken, Syed Naseer Hussain, GC Chandrashekhar as its candidates from Karnataka.
The seven BJP candidates from Uttar Pradesh include former Union Minister RPN Singh, former MP Chaudhary Tejveer Singh, state party general secretary Amarpal Maurya, former Minister of State Sangeeta Balwant, party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi, former MLA Sadhna Singh and former Agra Mayor Naveen Jain. Nomination was filed. Ramjilal Suman, Jaya Bachchan, Alok Ranjan from Samajwadi Party also filed their nomination.
Mahendra Bhatt from Uttarakhand and Samik Bhattacharya from West Bengal will be BJP candidates. Trinamool Congress has fielded Sagarika Ghosh, Sushmita Dev, Mohammad Nadimul Haq and Mamta Bala Thakur as its candidates. From Madhya Pradesh, BJP has given ticket to L Murugan, Umesh Nath Maharaj, Maya Narolia, Bansilal Gurjar and Congress has given ticket to Ashok Singh.
Abhishek Manu Singhvi from Himachal Pradesh and Chandrakant Handore from Maharashtra will be the Congress candidates. From Maharashtra, BJP will nominate Ashok Chavan, Medha Kulkarni, Ajit Gopachade and Shiv Sena’s Milind Deora.
From Odisha, BJP has fielded Ashwini Vaishnav, Biju Janata Dal has fielded Debashish Samantri, Subhashish Khuntia and Congress has fielded Debashish Samantri and Subhashish Khuntia. Congress will send Renuka Chaudhary and Anil Kumar Yadav to Rajya Sabha from Telangana.
