Rampur: Troubles have increased for senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, who is lodged in Sitapur jail on charges of getting a papad factory bulldozed and demanding extortion 18 years ago during the SP rule. The court has rejected the police’s final report and ordered a reinvestigation of the case. The next hearing of the case is scheduled for February 19.
What is the whole case?
It is alleged that on July 19, 2006, on the orders of Azam Khan, the administrative officials forcibly demolished the papad factory, cellar and flour mill located in Sainjni Nankar. The victim Zulfikar Khan alleges that the SP leader had asked him for a donation of Rs 5 lakh and this action was taken when he did not pay.
In this case, a case was registered against Azam Khan in Ganj police station on July 10, 2007 under sections of extortion, threat, assault and vandalism. After investigation, the police filed the final report in the court, but the plaintiff raised objections and questioned the police action.
FIR filed in July 2007
After the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) came to power in 2007, the victims submitted a written complaint to the Superintendent of Police (SP) on July 10, 2007. An FIR was lodged at the Ganj police station against Azam Khan on charges of extortion. The police, after completing their investigation, submitted a final report to the court, which issued notices to the complainants. However, Zulfiqar Khan, son of the now deceased Afzal Khan, filed an objection through his lawyer, challenging the police findings and questioning the integrity of the investigation.
Court order
The MP-MLA Magistrate Trial Court, after hearing the plaintiff’s arguments, has rejected the police report and ordered a reinvestigation. Azam Khan is currently serving a sentence in Sitapur jail in the case of two birth certificates of his son Abdullah Azam Khan.
