Ranya Rao Gold Smuggling Case: DGP Ramachandra Rao, father of actress Ranya Rao, arrested in the gold smuggling case, has come under investigation. He has been sent on compulsory leave following an investigation initiated by the Karnataka government. Ranya Rao, in a letter dated March 6, 2025 addressed to the Additional Director General of DRI in Bengaluru, claimed that a false case has been foisted on her.

Ranya Rao raised questions on DRI

Ranya Rao was arrested on March 3 at Bengaluru airport while returning from Dubai with 14.2 kg of gold worth Rs 12.56 crore. Ranya Rao wrote a letter to the Additional Director General of DRI in Bengaluru claiming that a false case has been foisted on her. She alleged that the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials thrashed her and forced her to sign some blank and pre-written papers.

Actress alleges assault

The actress claimed that she was slapped 10 to 15 times from the time she was taken into custody to when she was produced in court. “Despite being repeatedly beaten and slapped, I refused to sign the statement prepared by them (DRI officials),” she alleged. “One of the officials told me that if I don’t sign, they will reveal my father’s name and identity even though we know he is not involved,” Ranya Rao claimed.

Court rejects Ranya Rao’s bail plea

Ranya Rao is currently in jail and will have to remain in jail for the time being as a special court in Bengaluru rejected her bail plea on Friday. The DRI had earlier told the court that the gold smuggling case involving Ranya Rao is of international level and has a hawala connection as well. Because of this, it has become a matter related to national security. He said that it is necessary to investigate the role of this smuggling gang.

The Karnataka government on March 10, 2025 appointed Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta to investigate Ramachandra Rao’s stepdaughter’s role in the alleged gold smuggling activity. The state government also ordered a CID inquiry into the negligence on the part of police officials at the airport.
