Navalny, 47, one of Putin’s most prominent and staunch critics, was being held in a prison about 40 miles north of the Arctic Circle. According to sources, the cause of death of the politician was blood clot. Navalny’s lawyer said he met his client on Wednesday and “everything was fine with him.” Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said that Vladimir Putin has been informed about Navalny’s death.

“The Federal Penitentiary Service is conducting the inspection in accordance with existing regulations,” Peskov said. No instructions are required in this regard.” The Federal Penitentiary Service is sending a commission to investigate the incident where Navalny died.

Yamal Federal Penitentiary Service said in a statement, “Convict Navalny felt unwell after a walk and almost immediately began to lose consciousness, medical personnel of the institution immediately arrived, and an emergency medical team was called. All necessary resuscitation measures were taken, but the result was not positive.”

Led the protests in Kremlin in 2010

Navalni was accused of poisoning
In 2020, Navalny fell into a coma after being poisoned by Russia’s FSB security service, suspected to be using Novichok, and was flown to Germany for treatment. He recovered and returned to Russia in January 2021, where he was arrested for parole violation and sentenced to the first of several prison terms, totaling more than 30 years.

Putin has recently begun his campaign for the presidency for his fifth term. He is already the longest-serving Russian leader since Joseph Stalin.
