Russia Ukraine War: After the threat of US President Donald Trump, Volodimir Jailonsci announced today that if NATO membership for the country is secured, they will be removed from Ukraine’s President’s President immediately.

Following the war between Russia and Ukraine and threats from US President Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday announced that he would step down as President of Ukraine ‘immediately’ if it secures NATO membership for the country. Let us tell you that before this, a war of words had started between President Trump and Zelensky. Trump had described Zelensky as a dictator without a mandate and the US has been constantly pressuring Ukraine for a ceasefire.

Speaking at a press conference in Kiev, Zelensky said, “If there is peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to leave my post, I am ready. I can change it for NATO.” He also said that if needed, he would step down ‘immediately’.

In addition, Zelensky urged United States President Donald Trump to understand Ukraine’s situation and provide concrete security guarantees to support its defense against Russian aggression. Zelensky also said he wanted to see Trump as Ukraine’s partner and more than just a mediator between Kiev and Moscow.

Will resign after getting NATO membership

According to news agency Reuters, the Ukrainian president told reporters, “I expect a lot of understanding from Trump towards each other.” He further added, “Security guarantees from the US are very much needed.” Speaking ahead of the third anniversary of Russia’s full invasion of Ukraine, Zelensky said his country and the Trump administration were close to an agreement on US access to Ukrainian natural resources in exchange for security assistance.

After Russian forces made the fastest advances in Ukraine last year since the 2022 invasion, Donald Trump expressed his intention to mediate a peace deal, citing heavy loss of life and property in the ongoing conflict.

Trump and Zelenskyy have publicly attacked each other after the US President accused his Ukrainian counterpart of starting a war with Russia. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy accused Trump of living in a “misinformation bubble”.

War of words between Trump and Zelenskyy

Zelenskyy has also rejected the outcome of the recent US-Russia talks in Riyadh, where the two nations agreed to launch joint efforts towards peace talks. Zelenskyy firmly stated that “there will be no negotiations behind Kiev’s back.”

Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks on February 12, which focused on improving bilateral relations and finding a solution to Moscow’s ongoing war with Ukraine. As a part of these diplomatic efforts, officials from both countries gathered in Riyadh on February 18 for further discussions.
