Russia Ukraine war: On ceasefire, Trump said that there should be a face-to-face talk between Putin and Zelenskyy regarding ceasefire between the two countries.

US President Donald Trump has recently indicated a change in his stance regarding the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire. Earlier he had announced plans to mediate direct talks between Russia and Ukraine to end the war soon, but now he says that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should first hold face-to-face talks themselves.

When Trump spoke to Putin on the phone
The US President spoke to Russian President Putin on the phone on August 19, 2025 during discussions with Zelensky and European leaders at the White House. During this, Trump suggested that Putin and Zelensky should meet. He described it as a very good initial step towards ending the war.

Both leaders will have to talk directly
At the same time, now Trump has indicated that for lasting peace in Russia-Ukraine, both leaders will have to talk directly first. This new stance of Trump, in which he insisted on direct talks between Putin and Zelensky before a ceasefire, is being considered a U-turn from his earlier position. Where he had put more emphasis on immediate ceasefire and mediation.

Trump engaged in bilateral talks

Recently, Donald Trump said in an interview with WABC radio host Mark Levin, ‘I just want to see what happens in the meeting between Putin and Zelensky? He is busy preparing for bilateral talks between the two leaders.’ After this statement, experts speculated that Trump has now directly put the matter of ceasefire on Putin and Zelensky.

This strategy of Trump can increase pressure on Ukraine

Experts believe that this strategy can increase pressure on Ukraine, as Trump also made it clear that Ukraine may have to give up the hope of lost territories and NATO membership.
