In this regard, the Commission formally registered the name of President Vladimir Putin as a candidate on Monday. There is no one far and wide to challenge Putin.
Putin is currently 71 years old and is contesting the elections as an independent candidate, but he has complete control over the political system of Russia. He has established this during his 24 years in power. His main critics who could challenge Putin are either in jail or living abroad. Independent media are largely banned in the country. Putin had contested the elections in 2012 as a candidate of the ‘United Russia’ party, but in 2018 he contested the elections as an independent candidate. Putin’s popularity rating is around 80 percent and he is even more popular than United Russia. The Central Election Commission formally recognized the president as a candidate after reviewing 315,000 signatures collected by Putin’s campaign from all 89 regions of Russia.

Know who can be an independent candidate
According to Russian election law, the names of independent candidates can appear on the ballot only after at least 300,000 signatures. The Commission has already approved three other candidates who have been nominated by parties represented in Parliament and were not required to collect signatures.
