SK Mouddin, national convener of the Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM), affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), said reciting Vande Mataram is not against Islam and those opposing it are misleading the Muslim community.

SK Mouddin, national convener of the Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM), affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), said on Thursday that reciting Vande Mataram is not against Islam and that those opposing it are misleading the Muslim community.

India’s national song, Vande Mataram, is completing 150 years. To mark the occasion, the central government has decided to organize events at 150 locations across the country, where it will be sung en masse.

Year-long Celebration Inaugurated
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the year-long celebration of the national song, Vande Mataram, in Delhi today and will also release a commemorative postage stamp and coin. Mouddin said in a statement, “Vande Mataram means ‘O Motherland, I salute you.’ How can it be called un-Islamic according to Sharia, when it praises the fertile land, trees, flowers, water, mountains, and beautiful mornings and evenings of the country.”

Attempts to mislead Muslims
Muddin said that the song expresses love for the nation, known as Hubb-ul-Watani in Islam and nationalism in Hindi. He said that some radical Muslims try to mislead by associating it with worship. Muslims should feel proud to say Vande Mataram and recite it with pride.

Translation of the Vande Mataram Song
Muddin claimed that before independence, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and other prominent Muslims used to recite it with pride, but after independence, some separatist elements tried to mislead the community and keep it away from the national mainstream. Muddin said that in 2006, as the chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Madrasa Board, he translated the song and distributed it among all madrasas registered with the board and Muslims across the state.
