Social activist Anna Hazare is planning another hunger strike. He has written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding this matter. Previously, in 2011, Hazare launched a protest against the UPA government in Delhi over the Lokayukta Bill. Hazare received widespread public support across the country, forcing the government to relent.
In his letter, Hazare warned of a hunger strike to demand the implementation of the Lokayukta Bill. He wrote, “He is planning another hunger strike to ensure the implementation of the Lokayukta Act. He will begin his fast at the Yadav Baba Temple in Ralegan Siddhi on January 30, 2026.” It is believed that this hunger strike will also receive support from the opposition. Anna warned the Maharashtra government in a letter, writing, “If this law is not implemented, he will begin a hunger strike.”
The bill has been passed in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.
Anna Hazare wrote in the letter, “Despite the government’s assurances, the Lokayukta Bill was passed in the Legislative Assembly on December 28, 2022, and in the Legislative Council on December 15, 2023, but it has not been implemented. Two years have passed since the bill was passed, yet it remains unimplemented. The government’s backtracking has forced him to embark on a hunger strike.
The government’s intentions regarding the bill are flawed.
Anna Hazare further wrote in the letter, “The lack of implementation of the Lokayukta Bill demonstrates the government’s lack of willpower. Anna has previously written several letters to the government regarding this bill, and has also spoken to the government several times. Anna Hazare alleges that the government’s intentions regarding this bill are flawed. The failure to implement the bill after its passage in both legislative assemblies demonstrates that the government is deliberately delaying it. Therefore, he is forced to go on a hunger strike.
Anna Hazare shook the government in 2011
In April 2011, social activist Anna Hazare protested against the UPA government on the issue of corruption. He demanded that the government form a committee to draft the Lokpal Bill. The government accepted his demand and issued a notification on April 9th, the fifth day of the fast, after which Anna broke his fast by drinking lemonade from a little girl.
The government relented to Anna’s renewed fast.
After ending the fast, he announced in his address that if the Lokpal Bill is not passed by August 15th, he will resume the movement the following day. The bill was not passed by August 15th, and Anna resumed his fast on August 16th. Following this, protests in support of Anna began across the country. Ultimately, the government had to hastily introduce the bill in the Lok Sabha. After the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha, Anna’s movement ended.
Leaders Emerging from Anna’s Movement
Anna’s movement was supported by figures like Kiran Bedi, Kumar Vishwas, Anupam Kher, General VK Singh, and Yogendra Yadav. Many, including Arvind Kejriwal, Sanjay Singh, and Shazia Ilmi, became heroes after the movement, while VK Singh and Kiran Bedi reaped political benefits. Anna kept his movement away from political influence. Many of those involved in the movement with Anna became leaders through this movement. Together, these individuals formed the Aam Aadmi Party, with Kejriwal as its convener.
