Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has set out on a Delhi march with his demands for Ladakh. He will reach Delhi on October 2. He has taken out a march on foot from Ladakh to Delhi. His demand is that Ladakh should be given the status of a state and included in the Sixth Schedule. He says that if his demands are not met, he will sit on a dharna. He will sit on a dharna at Rajghat. During this, Wangchuk bluntly said that he has no plans to enter politics.
Sonam Wangchuk and about 75 volunteers started a march on foot from Leh on September 1. Sonam Wangchuk demands from Prime Minister Modi that Ladakh should be included in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. So that the people here get the power to make laws to protect their land and cultural identity.
No response received so far
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, a memorandum related to the demands was submitted to the PM. But, no response has been received so far. The creation of 5 additional districts in Ladakh may be indirectly linked to his demonstration. We don’t know whether these districts have got the power to take decisions or not. If this does not happen then it will be unfortunate.
Ladakh is ecologically fragile
Wangchuk said that Ladakh is an ecologically fragile region. In view of the industrial and climate challenges, PM Modi is urged to include it in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Wangchuk said that the LAHDCs (Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils) of Leh and Kargil have the right to spend only development funds. The people of Ladakh also want the power to make laws. We want the government to discuss the demands of the people.
Fasted for 21 days in March
Demanding full statehood for Ladakh and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, Wangchuk fasted for 21 days from March. He consumed only salt and water. He says that this ecologically fragile region has to be saved from industries set up for the purpose of earning profits.
