South Africa: The Electoral Commission says it is going to announce election results today despite threats from former President Jacob Zuma.

Before India, the results of the general elections in South Africa are going to come. Despite the threats of former South African President Jacob Zuma, the announcement of the election results has been made today. Due to this, the whole world is looking at the election results of South Africa. Cyril Ramaphosa is the current President of South Africa. South Africa has strong relations with India. Ramaphosa and PM Modi have a deep friendship.

South Africa’s Independent Election Commission said that it will continue to declare the final results of the country’s general and provincial elections on Sunday afternoon despite threats to postpone the process of declaring further results over alleged irregularities. In a media briefing late Saturday night, Independent Election Commission (IEC) CEO Mosotho Moepya said that the authority would work overnight to resolve 579 objections to proceed with the scheduled announcement. After this, President Cyril Ramaphosa will address.

What Jacob Zuma said

Earlier, speaking on behalf of 26 smaller parties in the election, former president Jacob Zuma called on the IEC to give them more time to lodge objections. He said there were many more “serious” objections that the parties needed to prepare. However, he did not share any details of other allegations. Zuma had said that “we will need more time. Nobody should announce the election result tomorrow (Sunday). Zuma strongly threatened that if the IEC goes ahead with its plan for Sunday, it would be “considered inciting people”. “Nobody will die if the results are not announced tomorrow,” Zuma said.

It is better not to cause trouble

Jacob Zuma had said that “do not deliberately start trouble when there is no trouble”. He warned the IEC that a commission is needed to investigate the complaints, because “those who are in charge cannot investigate it themselves”. If the IEC persists with its plan, the 26 parties will be forced to seek legal intervention. Moepya said that although all complaints were to be received by the IEC within 48 hours of the polls ending at 9pm on Wednesday, the authority had allowed an extension until 6pm on Saturday. Zuma is the leader of the Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, which was launched a few months ago and pulled off a big upset by winning the most votes in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal, ending the African National Congress’ (ANC) majority in that province.

MK also gets majority in several provinces, but forming government is a hurdle

MK also won enough votes in other provinces. Analysts credited it with playing a major role in reducing the more than 40 percent majority that had kept the ANC in power since it first won in 1994 under the leadership of Nelson Mandela. Although the ANC got the most votes nationally, it failed to secure more than 50 percent of the votes needed to form a government. Legal advisors and analysts across multiple channels were unanimous in their view that the IEC was acting fully within the rules of law and the Constitution in its actions.
