Sri Lanka’s new President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is coming to India from today till 17 December. This visit will be his first foreign visit after becoming the President. Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that during this time President Dissanayake will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Draupadi Murmu. He will be accompanied by Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and Deputy Finance Minister Anil Jayanta Fernandes.
This visit is considered important to further strengthen bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka. The Foreign Ministry said that President Dissanayake’s visit is an opportunity to promote multifaceted and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries. President Dissanayake will also participate in a business event in Delhi, in which further economic and commercial relations between the two countries will be discussed. Apart from this, he will also visit Bodh Gaya, which is also an important place from his religious point of view.

During President Dissanayake’s visit, talks are likely to be held on maritime security cooperation and other major bilateral and regional issues. During the meeting held by India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar during his visit to Colombo in October, the leaders of the two countries emphasized the need to further deepen bilateral relations. In this meeting, Jaishankar also expressed his commitment to support Sri Lanka under India’s ‘Neighbor First’ policy.
When did Disanayake become President?
Anura Kumara Disanayake became the President of Sri Lanka on 23 September 2024. He is the leader of Sri Lanka’s National People’s Power (NPP) Party and took charge after winning the election to this post. Sri Lanka is India’s closest maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean region and has an important place under India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) policy. President Disanayake’s visit is expected to boost economic, security and cultural cooperation between the two countries, which will significantly contribute to regional stability and development in future.
