Syria Civil War: The violence that has been going on in Syria for the last three days has pushed the country towards another civil war. So far more than 1,000 people have been killed in this conflict, including a large number of civilians, government security personnel and fighters.
At the center of this violence is the conflict between the new government of Syria and supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad. The fighting has disrupted the country’s electricity and water supply, and thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes. According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), this is one of the deadliest incidents in Syria’s 14-year conflict.
What is happening in Syria?
In fact, Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for 50 years, was removed from power in December 2024. After his departure, a new equation of power emerged in the country, in which a confrontation began between several factions. Pro-Assad forces are still active in some areas and are carrying out guerrilla attacks against the new government. In response, armed factions of the new government have stepped up attacks.
Attacks on Alawites
With Assad gone, Alawites who supported him are now facing retaliation. Many Sunni rebel groups believe that the Alawites received special benefits during Assad’s rule. According to SOHR, Syrian security forces killed 162 Alawite civilians in field executions in Latakia province, a stronghold of Assad supporters.
Who are the Alawites and why are they being targeted?
The Alawites make up about 12% of Syria’s total population. They are associated with Shia Islam, but their religious rituals are different from the Sunni majority. Bashar al-Assad and his family came from this community, and during his rule Alawites were given key positions in the army and administration.
Why are the attacks happening?
Sunni extremist groups believe that Alawites received special privileges under Assad’s rule. Now after the change of power, the Alawite community is being targeted in a spirit of revenge. The religious divide in Syria was already deep, but this violence is increasing it further. Coastal areas like Latakia and Baniyas are the most affected by violence.
The government says that the attacks by Assad’s remaining fighters are being responded to, but human rights organizations allege that the government itself is promoting communal violence. At the same time, France has expressed deep concern over this violence and has demanded an independent investigation. The United Nations has said that the communal violence in Syria should be stopped immediately. So far, America and Russia have not given any official statement on this. Let us tell you that the situation in Syria is deteriorating rapidly and this violence can take a more terrible form in the future.
