Tamil Nadu is due for assembly elections in 2026. There is speculation about a BJP-AIADMK alliance ahead of the elections. BJP chief K Annamalai on Friday said the party’s central leadership will take an “appropriate decision” on the size and form of the alliance for the 2026 assembly elections, aimed at ousting MK Stalin’s ruling DMK from power.
His remarks came amid speculation of a possible BJP-AIADMK alliance after AIADMK general secretary and former Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami met Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this week.
When asked about the AIADMK returning to the NDA, Annamalai said, “I am not authorized to talk about alliances or the formation of alliances at this time. The role I have been given as Tamil Nadu BJP president is to strengthen the party in the state.” Also read
He said that we are all trying to do this. The leaders are with me, the workers are with me. He said that our leadership will take a decision at the appropriate time about the form of the alliance and the nature of NDA in 2026 and naturally the media will be informed.
Know what Annamalai said on alliance with AIADMK
Speaking after a meeting with Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Annamalai called the 2026 elections an opportunity to remove the DMK from power and cited corruption allegations and the “deteriorating law and order situation” in the state. He said, “The DMK should be removed from power and no vote should be wasted by transfer of votes between different parties. There is a five-cornered contest in Tamil Nadu right now. Nowhere else in Indian politics do you get to see a five-cornered contest.
He reiterated that the alliance decisions depend on the national leadership of the BJP. Regarding the alliance, you have to understand that for a national party like the BJP, a disciplined party, it is our national leadership that will take the decision. So, we have committees, we have parliamentary boards that consider many aspects before taking a decision.
Annamalai attacks Vijay
He said that we respect our national leadership and they will ensure and look into everything. He said, “They will decide what to do next?” On the recent criticism of actor-turned-politician Vijay by both the BJP and the DMK, Annamalai dismissed it as “speaking politics” rather than action.
“It is very sad that Vijay has decided to do speaking politics, just take a mic, criticise the central government and the state government and get away with it. People are asking what solutions are you going to bring.. are you solving the issues… Today he spoke on the fishermen issue. We are solving the fishermen issue. The BJP is working very hard to solve the fishermen issue,” he said.
