Tamil Nadu: Governor RN Ravi expressed serious concern over the demographic changes taking place in some parts of the country including Assam and West Bengal

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi on Tuesday expressed serious concern over the demographic changes taking place in some parts of the country, including Assam and West Bengal. He described it as a ‘time bomb’ and appealed to the concerned parties to find a solution. Amid the ongoing disputes over language in some states, including Maharashtra, and claims of imposition of Hindi, he said that keeping bitterness in the name of language is not in the character or culture of India.

Ravi said, “This country has always managed to fight external invasions, but when it comes to internal matters, what happened in the past? India was divided in 1947 due to internal turmoil. People who believed in one ideology declared that they did not want to live with all of us. This ideology broke our country.” Concern expressed over demographic changes The Tamil Nadu Governor was addressing students and teachers at the Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) on the occasion of the commencement of the academic year 2025-2026. He asked, “Is anyone concerned about the demographic changes that have taken place in Assam, West Bengal and Purvanchal (parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar) in the last 30-40 years? Can anyone imagine today that in the coming 50 years, these areas will not work towards dividing the country?”

“We have to think about how to deal with this problem”
The former IPS officer said, “We should do a study on the growing sensitive demography in some areas and its future. This problem is like a time bomb. We have to think about how we will deal with this problem in the future. We should start finding a solution to this from today itself.” According to him, the military power of a country is not enough to deal with internal unrest. Ravi argued that if the military power of the Soviet Union was enough to deal with internal problems, it would not have disintegrated in 1991.

“It is not the character of India to have bitterness in the name of language”
Amid the ongoing dispute over language in Maharashtra and Karnataka, Ravi said that it is not the character of India to have bitterness in the name of language. “After Independence, we started fighting among ourselves. One of the reasons was language. They (those advocating states based on linguistic identity) called it linguistic nationalism,” the governor said. He said the central leadership has repeatedly made it clear that all Indian languages are of equal stature and deserve equal respect.

“Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said on several occasions that all Indian languages are our national languages and we respect each of them. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also said that at least primary education in every state should be imparted in local languages,” he said. The governor said bitterness between people in the name of language is not part of India’s ethos.
