Tamil Nadu MP Ganeshamurthy, who attempted suicide, died; he did not get a ticket for Lok Sabha elections

Tamil Nadu MP Ganeshamurthy, who attempted suicide a few days ago, died of a heart attack at 5 am. It is said that he was in depression due to not getting a ticket for the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Due to this, he took this step. Ganeshamurthy, who was elected on a DMK ticket in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Erode, felt uneasy and vomited. His family admitted him to a private hospital on Sunday, where doctors said his condition was critical.

Police had told news agency PTI that Ganeshamurthy complained of uneasiness at around 9.30 am on Sunday. He was admitted to a private hospital in Erode, Tamil Nadu by his family members. He was admitted to the ICU and put on a ventilator. Ganeshamurthy, who won from Erode constituency on the DMK’s ‘rising sun’ election symbol, was denied a ticket by the MDMK leadership.

Was joint organiser of DMK’s student wing in Erode

76-year-old Ganeshamurthy has been a stalwart of the Dravidian movement. Hailing from west Tamil Nadu, Ganeshamurthy has studied law. Attracted to the DMK in his school days, he was joint organiser of the DMK’s student wing in Erode. In 1984 he was appointed as the Erode district secretary of the DMK student wing. In 1989 he won from Modakurichi assembly constituency on a DMK ticket. Later, when Vaiko split the party and went on to launch his own Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) in 1996, Ganeshamurthy joined him.

Won the election in 2019

Later, in 1998 and 2009, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Erode on an MDMK ticket. In 2014 he lost the Erode constituency to the AIADMK. In 2019, he won from Erode on a DMK ticket as he contested on the ‘rising sun’ election symbol. While seat-sharing talks were underway, MDMK sources said Ganeshamurthy was re-nominated.

 

While it is rumoured that Ganeshamurthy took the step because he was not re-nominated, MDMK sources say he consumed poison due to family issues. While his wife Balamani had passed away earlier. Sources say issues in the extended family forced him to take the unpleasant decision.
