Light rain continues in some parts of Chennai city this morning as well. Due to this rain, many areas and roads are knee-deep in water. Due to which common people are looking very troubled. On Tuesday, Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu received intermittent heavy rains, due to which residential areas and roads were flooded with water up to 2 feet and traffic was also jammed during this time.
Many trains were canceled
Meanwhile, bus services were affected in many areas, while seeing the problem increasing, South Railway canceled 4 express trains including Chennai Central-Mysore Kaveri Express due to waterlogging. At the same time, many trains were diverted and some were stopped before Chennai Central Railway Station. For some trains, the original station was transferred to suburban Avadi. Apart from this, many domestic flights were also canceled because passengers did not come.
IMD gave this information
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the low pressure area over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal moved from west to northwest on Tuesday evening and intensified into a pressure area. It further said that the weather system lay over southwest Bay of Bengal at 5:30 pm today, about 490 km east of Chennai and 590 km southeast of Nellore.
Extremely heavy rainfall likely till October 17
The Meteorological Department said in a bulletin, “It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore near Chennai on the morning of October 17 as a pressure area.” It further said, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at some places in the state on Wednesday, with extremely heavy rainfall at some isolated places. Squally wind speed reaching 60 kmph is likely over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts till October 17. The stormy weather is expected to gradually subside after Thursday, the IMD said.
Earlier, heavy rains lashed many parts of Andhra Pradesh due to a low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal. The area had moved from the southeast part of the sea towards west and northwest direction and remained there on Tuesday morning.
Heavy rain likely at some places today too
The IMD in its bulletin said that on October 16, “heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls at one or two places is likely over Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Chennai districts. In view of the forecast, the government declared a holiday in schools, colleges and government offices except essential services in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet districts on October 16. The government further informed that state and central disaster response force teams are on standby at 26 locations in Chennai and adjoining districts. Also, 219 boats are ready for rain-related operations in Chennai and other parts of the state. 931 relief centres are ready in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet and Kancheepuram districts and top IAS officers are monitoring the situation.
The work to clear waterlogging at over 300 places in the city is underway but barring the incident of wall collapse and one person getting injured, no rain-related incident has been reported so far. No untoward incident has been reported.
CM took stock of the situation
Here, Chief Minister MK Stalin along with state ministers inspected the rainwater drainage work in flood-affected areas and took municipal corporation employees to a tea stall and had tea and biscuits for them. Stalin appreciated the services of sanitation/civic staff and officials despite heavy rains and said he would stand shoulder to shoulder with the frontline workers. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also inspected several areas including Narayanapuram lake near Velachery and officials said excess rainwater from the lake flows into channels due to advance desilting work. He inspected the Integrated Command and Control Centre of the Chennai Corporation, which is functioning from its headquarters, Ripon Building, here, to review the ongoing work to deal with the situation arising out of the rains.
Heavy rain likely for three days
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said that widespread rainfall was recorded over Tamil Nadu during the last 24 hours under the influence of the weather system. Further, the RMC said that heavy to very heavy rains are likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during the next three days, while extremely heavy rains may occur at one or two places during the next two days (October 16 and 17). On October 16, winds of 40 to 50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph are likely over northern coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.
How much rain did it fall where?
Further, the RMC said that the southwest monsoon has withdrawn and northeast monsoon rains have started over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and coastal Andhra Pradesh. According to the RMC bulletin, Kudumiyanmalai in Pudukottai district received 13 cm of rain. Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district and Ennore in Chennai received 10 cm of rain each. Most parts of the state received monsoon rains ranging between 1 cm and 9 cm. This rainfall data is for a 24-hour period starting from 08.30 am on October 14 to 8.30 am the next day.
