Tel Aviv: Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made a big statement on the situation in Syria. He said that if the new government of Syria continues to act like the old government, it will have to pay a heavy price. If the new government continues to allow Iran to interfere and helps provide weapons to Hezbollah, then Israel will not sit quiet, it will be forced to take necessary steps. Netanyahu said that Israel has “no intention of interfering” in Syria’s internal affairs.
No intention to interfere in internal affairs
Netanyahu said in a video address on Tuesday, “We have no intention to interfere in the internal affairs of Syria. However, we intend to do what is necessary for our security. Therefore, I approve the bombing by the Air Force on the strategic military capabilities left by the Syrian army. This is so that they do not fall into the hands of the jihadists. This is exactly like what the British Air Force did in the Second World War. It bombed the fleet of the Vichy regime (France). The British Air Force did this so that those weapons do not fall into the hands of the Nazis.”
Initiative of friendship and warning too
Netanyahu said that we want to have relations with the new government in Syria, but if this government allows Iran to be re-established in Syria, or gives weapons to Hezbollah or attacks us, then we will respond strongly to it. They will have to pay a heavy price for such actions and what happened with the previous government will happen with this government as well.
“Historic day” for the Middle East
On Sunday, Syrian rebels entered Damascus and forced President Bashar al-Assad to flee the country. Assad’s rule in Syria, which lasted for more than two decades, ended. Netanyahu praised Assad’s fall, calling it a “historic day” for the Middle East region. Netanyahu further acknowledged that while the fall brings great opportunities, it also brings great dangers. He also appealed to countries bordering Israel and elsewhere for peace.
New opportunities come with new dangers
Netanyahu also shared a video on X and said, “This is a historic day for the Middle East. The fall of the Assad regime, the tyranny in Damascus, offers great opportunities, but it is also fraught with many dangers. We extend a hand of peace to all people in Syria: the Druze, the Kurds, the Christians and the Muslims who want to live in peace with Israel.” After the Syrian army abandoned its bases, Netanyahu said on Sunday that he had ordered the Israeli military to take control of these bases to ensure that no hostile forces could enter Israel right next to the border.
