Telangana: Big blow to BRS before Lok Sabha elections, former Deputy Chief Minister of the state T. Rajaiah left the party.

Telangana’s main party Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has suffered a major setback. Party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of the state T. Rajaiah resigned from BRS on Saturday. The former MLA announced that he has resigned from the primary membership of the party. Sources said Rajaiah is likely to join Congress. Rajaiah is the first prominent leader to quit BRS after it lost power to Congress in the state in the recent assembly elections.

Did not get ticket from party in 2023 elections

KCR’s party BRS has suffered this blow a few months before the Lok Sabha elections. Rajaiah was reportedly unhappy after the BRS leadership refused to give him a party ticket to contest from Ghanpur (Station) constituency in Jangaon district. BRS had fielded Rajaiah’s rival Kadiyam Srihari, who was also a former deputy CM. To pacify Rajaiah, BRS president and then Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao appointed him chairman of the Rythu Bandhu Committee, but his happiness was dashed with the BRS losing power.

Expressed dissatisfaction over the current situation of BRS

Since Srihari won the seat despite the Congress wave in the state, Rajaiah felt even more isolated in the party. Rajaiah expressed dissatisfaction over the current situation of BRS and said that he has been marginalized in the party. Rajaiah did not reveal his future plans, but his praise for the Congress indicates that he will soon join the grand old party. He reminded that he was in the Congress for 15 years and as a member of the Congress Forum for Telangana, he had met Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to demand a separate state for Telangana.

Removed from cabinet after allegations of corruption

Rajaiah was first elected from Ghanpur (Station) assembly seat in 2009. Since then he was representing this seat. After the formation of Telangana in 2014, he became one of the two Deputy CMs and was allotted the Health portfolio. However, KCR dropped Rajaiah from the cabinet in 2015 following allegations of corruption in the health department. KCR fielded him again in 2018 from the same constituency, and though he retained the seat, he was not included in the cabinet. Rajaiah started crying in front of his supporters after KCR decided to field Srihari in the 2023 elections.
