Telecom Department: The Department of Telecommunications cautioned consumers that in some cases SIM cards are being purchased on the basis of fake documents, fraud, cheating or identity.

Telecom Department Alert: The Department of Telecommunications has alerted consumers about the misuse of telecom resources by fraudsters and fraudsters. The Department of Telecommunications has also warned fraudsters and fraudsters who tamper with or defraud telecom identifiers such as mobile numbers, IP addresses, IMEIs and SMS headers. The Department of Telecommunications has also assured consumers that DoT is also implementing several policies to create a safe telecom environment for all citizens.

According to the information given by the Ministry of Telecommunications, the Department of Telecommunications has taken several steps to prevent the misuse of telecom resources for cyber crime and financial fraud. Fraudsters are adopting various tactics to misuse telecom resources. Cases have been observed where miscreants acquire Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards or other telecom identifiers such as SMS headers to send bulk SMS to citizens through fraud, deception or identity.

What did the Department of Telecommunications say?

The Department of Telecommunications said that in many cases it has also been observed that some people buy SIM cards in their name and give them to others for use. Sometimes the person to whom the SIM is given misuses it for cyber fraud, due to which the original user also becomes a criminal. It has also been observed that in some cases SIM cards are being purchased through fake documents, fraud, cheating or identity. This is an offense under the Telecommunications Act, 2023. Many times it has also been found that the point of sale has been involved in facilitating such purchases, which is tantamount to promoting crime.

Telecommunications Department warned

The Department of Telecommunications warned the consumers that in some cases SIM cards are being purchased on the basis of fake documents, fraud, cheating or identity. This is an offense under the Telecommunications Act, 2023. Many times it has been found that the point of sale has been involved in facilitating such purchases, which is tantamount to promoting crime. Cases have been observed where miscreants misuse the Calling Line Identity (CLI) and also manipulate IP address, IMEI (mobile handset identifier), SMS headers to send fraudulent messages to defraud consumers.

The Department of Telecommunications has warned all those involved in fraud and forgery that all such activities violate the provisions of the Telecommunications Act, 2023 and are considered offences under this Act. Under Section 42(3), such offences are punishable with imprisonment up to three years or fine up to Rs 50 lakh or both. Section 42(6) of the Act also provides for similar punishment for those promoting any offence under the Act.
